Nepal. A country of almost 23 million people, mostly living in and off the country. Daylight dictates when and for how long people work, for electricity is by no means widespread outside the towns. With little manufacturing infrastructure, it is not surprising that the main exports are spices, leather, carpets, clothing, jute goods and grain.

Bhutan. This tiny, impoverished Kingdom, lays to the East of Nepal dwarfed by the Himalayas and surrounded by its powerful neighbours, China and India. The local name for Bhutan is Druk Yul which means ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’. Bhutan’s Buddhist culture and breathtaking scenery make it a natural tourist attraction – although it was only opened up to outsiders in 1970. Even today, visitors travel as part of a pre-arranged party – and back packers are discouraged. Handicrafts, along with timber, cement and electricity represent the major exports from this fascinating country of just 2.4 million people.

Tibet. Known as ‘The Roof of the World” Tibet has been governed as an autonomous region of China since they invaded in 1950, claiming a centuries old sovereignty. Tibet’s economy depends largely on agriculture. The country is mineral rich, but poor transport links have limited their exploitation. Tourism is a growing revenue earner as are the export of livestock and handicrafts.
